Honoring Winston "Gypsy" Peters: T&T’s Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism
What an uplifting day it was for Caribbean culture and society when calypsonian Winston “Gypsy” Peters, Trinidad and Tobago’s newly appointed Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism, was honored by D’ Big Apple Calypso Revue Foundation, Inc. The resplendent Skylight Art Gallery at Brooklyn’s Restoration Plaza was the setting for this historic event on Sunday August 29. In attendance at the celebration was a wide cross section of cultural connoisseurs and activists who, no doubt, revere Caribbean culture.

National Academy For The Performing Arts Building Opens in Trinidad & Tobago

Prime Minister Patrick Manning has opened the controversial National Academy for the Performing Arts building. The stage is the first in the world specifically designed to accommodate large steelpan orchestras. The design concept of the building is in the image of Trinidad & Tobago’s national flower, the Chaconia. The building was constructed by the Shanghai Construction Group of China but the services of many local contractors were used.
Haitian American, Edwidge Danticat is recipient of the Annual Brooklyn Book Festival "BoBi" Award

The fourth annual Brooklyn Book Festival will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2009. This year the festival will honor acclaimed author Edwidge Danticat. Each year, the Brooklyn Book Festival “BoBi” award is bestowed on an author who has a broad impact on the field of literature and on the people of Brooklyn.
Danticat, who hails from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and came to Brooklyn at the age of twelve, burst onto the literary landscape with her debut novel Breath, Eyes, Memory, which was critically acclaimed for its lyrical intensity and paved the way for her National Book Award-nominated collection of short stories Krik? Krak!A writer who deftly draws on her experiences and honest depictions of the fear and pain, passion and beauty of her Haitian homeland, Danticat is one of America’s brightest and most graceful writers.
The Brooklyn Book Festival is a huge, free public event presenting over 220 authors participating in panel discussions and readings, young adult and children’s programming and a literary marketplace of more than 150 booksellers, publishers and literary organizations. Readings are held at Brooklyn Borough Hall, in Borough Hall Plaza and Columbus Park, at St. Francis College and the Brooklyn Historical Society. The Brooklyn Book Festival is presented by Brooklyn Tourism and the Brooklyn Literary Council, initiatives of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.
