EVERYBODY'S Endorses Jumaane Williams For City Council
Sept. 7, 2009
If the 45th Council District (Flatbush and East Flatbush) in New York City were in a white and liberal neighborhood, it would be the talk of the town because it has the most exciting race in the dull New York City primary, September 15.
The representatives of several candidates and some candidates in the 45th Council District, Brooklyn, have been graciously asking EVERYBODY’S Magazine for its endorsement.
We have thoroughly evaluated each candidate and here is our conclusion:
- Sam Taitt: He is always running and not people friendly; he appeals to his fellow Barbadians for votes. He cannot help the district on the City Council.
- Earlene King: Like Taitt, she is always running and her platform is as always not clear. She appeals to her fellow Guyanese for their vote.
- Ernest Emmanuel: He runs for something in almost every election perhaps to show his fellow Haitians that someone cares.
- Dr. Kendall Stewart: He is seeking re-election although two of his close aides while working in his office stole public funds. They have pleaded guilty in a federal court and are awaiting sentencing. Stewart is not in public office to help the public, he is there to help himself. He is banking that the other candidates in the race will split the vote and he will win by default.
- Dr. Dexter McKenzie: This is his first time seeking public office and we are impressed. He is articulate and is sincere about helping the community; his only weakness is that he is appealing too much to his fellow Jamaicans. Unfortunately, a vote for him is indirectly a vote for Dr. Kendall Stewart. We hope that he will seek another office perhaps a race for the New York State Senate because he has a bright political future ahead.
- Jumaane Williams: He is the candidate the Stewart camp is really afraid of. He is also the only candidate who was not born in the Caribbean so unlike the other candidates, Mr. Williams is not using “island of birth” to seek votes and divide the community. Williams was born in Brooklyn of Grenadian parentage. He is appealing to all voters and not voters who hailed from a particular island.
Williams has demonstrated his ability to provide essential services to the community especially in housing and quality of life programs. Unlike several candidates who know a part of the community, Williams knows and understands the entire community. If he is elected, he will bring leadership and fresh air to the City Council and to the residents of Flatbush and East Flatbush.
These are some reasons why Williams has received the endorsements from The New York Times, a massive plus, for this young candidate and the endorsement of major unions in New York City.
The community cannot afford another term with Dr. Kendall Stewart. We understand the majority of voters are embarrassed over Stewart’s poor and questionable leadership and they are supporting “any other candidate.” But voting for “any other candidate” is exactly what Stewart wants; he hopes the other candidates will divide the vote. To avoid this disaster, voters must vote for the candidate who is most likely to defeat Stewart and who is running neck and neck with Stewart.
That candidate is Jumaane Williams.
We urge the public to vote for Jumaane Williams and EVERYBODY’S, the Caribbean-American magazine, proudly endorses him. Read more about Jumane Williams here.
Jumaane Williams and his mother, Pat.
